It’s Hispanic Heritage Month in October so I thought I’d share a favorite appetizer of mine with a latin flare. Living in South Florida, Hispanics are the majority around here for sure. And even though I have been born and raised in Miami/Ft Lauderdale I am not fluent (at all) in Spanish. I get teased all the time because I AM hispanic!! My father is from Puerto Rico, however, my mother is French-Canadian. We never spoke Spanish (or French) at home so I never learned. Ugh. I like to think that I can make up for it on the dance floor though! I LOVE to dance salsa, merengue, bachata, and la rueda. It’s just in my blood. It comes easy to me and it is SO. MUCH. FUN. Somehow living amongst all these hispanics, I managed to marry a complete gringo who has no rhythm. The funny thing is…he is fluent in Spanish. LOL. I guess we make up for each other’s weaknesses.

This appetizer is seriously so easy. Four ingredients- block of Brie, guava paste, puff pastry and egg wash. That’s it! Throw it in the oven and 25 minutes later you have a piping hot appetizer that will be gone in minutes. My 2 boys got their hands on this after I finished taking pictures and they DEVOURED it. So if a 5-year old and 7-year old can clean the plate (ok, maybe they had my help too) then it’s a winner. You may want to make two… just sayin.

Guava and Brie En CrouteUnroll 1 puff pastry after it has thawed, but is still cold. Place block of Brie on top (I like to scrape off some of the wax first). Stir up guava paste and spoon it on top.

Guava and Brie En Croute Step by StepPinch sides of puff pastry together and use egg wash as your “glue”. Brush remaining egg wash over all sides of the pastry to create a golden brown color as it bakes.

Guava and Baked Brie En CrouteServe it hot out of the oven. Eat it with a fork or use crackers for dipping. Ummm, we used our fingers. Yes, it was THAT good.

Ingredients

  • 1 block Brie cheese
  • 1 block guava paste, stirred
  • 1 unthawed puff pastry sheet (that is still cold)
  • 1 egg (beaten with 2 T water added)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Place a sheet of parchment paper on cooking sheet. Unfold 1 sheet puff pastry and place on top. Add block of Brie to middle of pastry and spoon softened guava on top.
  3. Brush the edges of the pastry with egg wash and pinch together. Use additional egg wash to brush outside edges and sides. **Be sure there are NO gaps or holes! Your Brie WILL leak out all over!
  4. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve hot.

Dangerously Delicious

My name is Crystal Dangerfield and I am so excited to bring you tried and true recipes that my whole family and I enjoy together. I love being in the kitchen and trying new recipes. Of course we have our favorites, but my kids are pretty good sports about trying new things. I refuse to buy ready-made frozen meals and refrain from fast food. My kids do not know what a “happy meal” is and I want to keep it that way! My husband was diagnosed with Celiac’s Disease several years ago and I have had to learn how to alter recipes into gluten free versions that the whole family still loves.
