This soup was created by none other than a firefighter…. hence the name, Firehouse Soup! If it can satisfy the stomachs of about 10 hungry men then you know it’s gotta be good! I went inside the fire station to get the step-by-step direction on this one. Need a man’s meal? Then look no further- this soup has sausage, chicken, beans, bold spices and a secret ingredient as it’s base. Bet you’ll never guess!
Here in South Florida our firefighters are cross trained to be paramedics as well. The firehouses include multiple crews for a rescue truck, firetruck and ladder truck. So 1 station may have up to 10 men there at a time. That’s a lot of testosterone to feed! Usually the rookie cooks the meals, buuuut if you can whip up a mean meal like my friend Greg Zinkil, then you just assume the roll and take it as a compliment. Working in the ER I interact with these guys everyday. They really are stellar men (most of them). After working at the same hospital for the last 9 years and seeing the same faces you get to know these everyday heros little by little as they come to drop off patients. Greg
bragged mentioned to me a while ago that he makes this incredible soup at least once a week when he is on shift. His crew gave me the look and nod of approval and then continued to boast about his cooking prowess. Naturally, I was intrigued. So I did what every recipe hog would do… I invited myself over to the firehouse to watch the chef in action! Ha! My husband is a firefighter, so those guys don’t scare me. (Okay, maybe I was a little) It was actually a very amusing afternoon as I witnessed the initiation of a rookie firefighter’s first day into the fold. Fun times!
Think you’ve guessed the base for this manly soup? Beer! Fosters to be exact. Don’t worry, the alcohol cooks out as this is a slow cooking soup. There were no drunk firefighters present in the making of this soup! Promise. If you really feel uncomfortable using beer, then substitute with chicken broth. It’s delicious that way too!
